Zygnema
Zygnema contains about 120 species, 38 of
which are found in North America. The genus is widespread and sometimes abundant in freshwater ditches, ponds, and lakes of neutral or slightly acidic pH. Some species inhabit the flowing waters of streams; the flexible filaments move easily with the water current. Other species may be part of
the benthic or floating metaphytic communities of acidified lakes. Zygnema is often found with Spirogyra and Mougeotia.
