Volvox
Volvox is commonly found in freshwater ponds
and lakes around the world, and sometimes forms blooms in warmer weather. Volvox aureus is perhaps the most common species. This and ten other species have been found in the United States.
Volvox often migrates vertically in the water column, presumably due to its dependency on high levels of phosphorus for growth. The colonies swim nightly to depths of nearly 20 m to obtain this vital nutrient and then return to surface waters during the day to maximize their intake of the light energy needed for photosynthesis.
