- About 40 species of Tolypothrix are
described world-wide in habitats ranging from the tropics and
subtropics to the Arctic. Tolypothrix is usually found
in soft or acidic unpolluted freshwaters, and
- may be planktonic, tangled in submergent
vegetation, or growing on stones, macrophytes, or other algae.
The filaments form mats in mineral springs, streams, alkaline
swamps, or subaerial habitats. Benthic colonies may break free
from the bottom and float to the surface.
