Pediastrum

Pediastrum inhabits the planktonic and periphytic communities of freshwater lakes, swamps, rivers, and bogs, and is especially common in nutrient-rich environments throughout North America.

The cell walls are made up of silica and decay-resistant algaenans (hydrocarbon polymers that help keep the cells from breaking down). These remains persist is lake sediments and are sometimes associated with fossil fuel deposits.
