Ochromonas can produce isogametes that look very similar to the vegetative cells and fuse during sexually reproduction. Chrysophytes frequently form protective stomatocysts through both sexual and asexual reproduction that seem to germinate when triggered by changes in cell density. Like the siliceous scales of the synurophytes and diatom valves, the thick-walled siliceous stomatocysts are preserved in the sediment record and provide important ecological information. |
