Fischerella

Many species of Fischerella are subaerial, growing on wet rocks or moist, peaty, acidic soils. Aquatic species are found attached to submerged wood or tangled among other algae. Several species grow only on mosses and tree barks in tropical forests.

Mastigocladus (Fischerella) laminosus is a common thermophile - a cyanobacterium that thrives in temperatures greater than 45° C.

Fischerella is found in habitats similar to those of Stigonema, and the two genera are often difficult
to tell apart. However, the branches of Fischerella are uniseriate, while those of Stigonema are more than one cell thick.
