Stephanosphaera Cohn
From Greek stephanos, "crown" + sphaira, "ball"

Strands of cytoplasm connect each cell
to the edge of the gelatinous matrix.

Each cell has a pair
of equal flagella that
extend out through the
mucilage envelope.
The motile green algal colony Stephanosphaera is closely related to Haematococcus. The spherical or ellipsoidal colonies are composed of elongated cells with protoplastic extensions arranged in a crown- like ring within a gelatinous matrix. Each cell has two equal flagella, an eyespot, several contractile vacuoles, and a very large cup-shaped chloroplast with several pyrenoids.

Stephanosphaera cells are round in top view
and elongate when viewed from the side.
