Peridinium
Most Peridinium species are found in fresh or brackish waters, and cannot tolerate high salinity levels. The genus is nearly cosmopolitan in hard waters rich in calcium, but can also be found in waters of low pH and low nutrients. Peridinium is especially common in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Some species can form blooms.

Peridinium cinctum is quite common and can be found in freshwaters worldwide. Peridinium balticum is a known diatom endosymbiont, while Peridinium limbatum is common in bog environments.

The ecology of Lake Kinneret in Israel has been researched extensively. Here Peridinium gatunense forms large, conspicuous blooms February through June, accounting for 90% of the total phytoplankton biomass. The species Peridinium cinctum is known to migrate through 10 m of the Lake Kinneret water column daily.
