Navicula
Navicula is often found in freshwaters and nutrient-rich wetlands, and is usually bottom-dwelling. Certain species may also inhabit plant leaves, walls, stones, soil environments, or even sea ice. The genus is quite common and is broadly distributed across North America and much of the world.
The species Navicula thallodes is found in the Bering Sea and can form blades as long as 50 cm, which are the longest known diatom colonies. Several species can be osmotrophic; the cells are able to use glucose as the only source of carbon either in the light or in the dark.
