- Each cell in the colony enlarges and subsequently
divides 4 or 5 times into daughter colonies with
- the same number of cells as the parent. Sometimes
4 of the anterior cells do not divide, which may
- be an evolutionary link to the cell specialization
seen in the larger Volvox colonies where only the posterior
cells reproduce. During anisogamous sexual reproduction, male
colonies release packets
- of sperm cells that unite with female colonies
to form zygotes which germinate via meiosis.
