Dictyosphaerium Nägeli
From Greek diktyon, "net" + sphaira, "ball"

A Dictyosphaerium colony.

This colonial green alga has clusters of four cells at the ends of transparent branched strands. These strands radiate outwards from the center of the colony and are made of cell wall material from the old parent cells. The colonies are usually surrounded by clear mucilage that often contains bacteria. The cells are spherical or oval and are usually 3-10 µm in size. Each cell has one or two parietal, cup-shaped chloroplasts that cover most of the cell wall and have only one pyrenoid.

Colonies may not form in culture. The cells may instead be solitary and surrounded by mucilage.
